In this clip from Facing the Giants Coach Taylor challenges Brock to do his very best in a super challenging ‘death crawl’ exercise. He winds up realizing that he can do more than he thought he could and inspires the rest of the team with his perseverance.

Blindfolded and pressing on with the sometimes encouraging sometimes loud pushing of his coach, Brock simply pushes himself to keep going until the coach tells him he can stop. He made it all the way to the end zone; 5 times farther than he thought he was set out to go. Here are some of the take aways from this clip.

Do your best- Your best is so much more than you think it is. Really challenge yourself to do more than you think you are capable of.

Succeed with the help of others- Do you that there is a huge difference between what you can do by yourself verses what you can do with the help of others? Brock definitely did more because of that coach encouraging him.

Don’t give up- Brock was tired, his muscles were burning, that football player on his back was getting heavier and heavier. Do you face challenges daily that make you want to quit? Keep going, and persevere. That’s how to reach goals. There will always be challenges. It’s how you handle them that make you a success..

Encourage others- Brock thought that exercise was all about him. The entire team was affected by that experience. He was inspiring to others without even realizing it. People are watching how you handle your challenges, so make sure you handle them well.

Do you Rescue or Empower?

Tissue alert for this clip from the movie Ray, about a young and newly blind Ray Charles and a mother that knew that he needed to work things out for himself. Tough love like hers is not easy, but it’s so much more empowering for the receiver than rescuing would have been.

Are you a rescuer? Do you step in sometimes and rescue your clients? Do you do things for them that they really should learn to do for themselves? It sure can be a difficult trap sometimes. Maybe it’s not your clients, but your subordinates for which you tend to do this.

I was in a meeting today and the topic of ‘people pleasing disorder’ popped up in conversation. You want the client to like you so you do things for them that they really should learn how to do for themselves. Or, maybe you are too impatient to teach the client what they need to do. After all, it’s so much easier for you to do it yourself, right?

When we create a dependence on us or our services, we really aren’t helping our clients, co-workers or subordinates. Ken Blanchard describes this phenomenon as the ‘monkey on your back’. When the client or co-worker or subordinate constantly asks you to handle things, fix things, or think through the problem because they know that you will solve it for them, Blanchard says that you willingly accept their monkey on your back.

Now, think about this behavior becoming a pattern in your life. Soon you are caring and feeding a zoo full of monkeys. And, then you will begin to resent others for ‘making’ you deal with their problems or jobs. Taking on other people’s monkeys is a choice.

When Ray’s mom chose to quietly and tearfully let Ray find his own way, she gave him the gift of self-confidence, empowerment and self care skills that were no doubt a defining moment in his remarkable life.

Do you have any monkeys on your back that need to be given back to their rightful owners? Choose empowerment if you really want to help people.

See What No One Else Sees

In this clip from Patch Adams, Arthur teaches Patch the secret to looking beyond the problem to see the solutions and possibilities by changing the way that he counted the fingers that he was holding up.

Being in touch with the problem is important. People need to be able to relate to the problem. But, unless you can see the solution or possibilities, you can’t leave people better than you found them. Arthur shared three important lessons in this clip:

1. See what no one else sees.
2. See what everyone else chooses not to see out of fear, conformity or laziness.
3. See the whole world anew each day.

Isn’t that the essence of ingenuity? “Ingenuity, plus courage, plus work, equals miracles.” ~ Bob Richards.

I love this math equation, don’t you? So, first you need to see the world differently, which in the ingenuity part, then you have to have the courage to share your ideas and solutions. If you know in your heart that your solutions can help people, then holding them in is actually the same as hurting people.

If you believe that you will leave people better than you found them, then you need to work hard to help people with those creative solutions. Keep at it every day.

Never Give up on Your Dream

When was the last time that you wanted something as much as Cody the penguin wants to be selected for a surfer’s contest in this Surf’s Up movie clip? His passion trumps the lack of support by his family, his circumstances and even the decision maker’s opinion. He knew that he had something to offer even if others around him couldn’t see it.

Persistence is when you determine to not let your energy or enthusiasm be dampened by the nay sayers, or your disappointments or failures. To be persistent is to keep your eye on the prize of your dream or goal no matter what. Every challenge and disappointment is there to teach you something that will help you succeed. So if you take those challenges as opportunities to learn how to grow from it and still move forward, you will get to your dream.

I recall a consulting opportunity that I applied for and didn’t get one year. The next year, I tried for it again, having learned more about the client and their needs, and that time I got it. It has lead to many more opportunities since too. If I had given up after not receiving the opportunity the first time, I would have missed many blessings. Have you ever forged ahead with a goal even in the face of discouragement? What did you learn or accomplish as a result of sticking it out?

Never give up on your dream!

Know that You're Good

In the movie, Get Low, Quinn and Buddy approach the mysterious hermit Felix Bush's house to sell him a funeral, and Quinn makes Buddy go alone.

Not only is this a scary situation for Buddy because it was his first sales call, but because his client is a notorious and unpredictable hermit. His boss Quinn challenges him to do this call alone because “If you don’t do this yourself you will never know if you’re good, and you will never be good unless you know that you are.”

Did you know that you grow stronger when you step out and face your fears? Doing something that you don’t think you can do helps you to stretch your boundaries. It helps you gain confidence. If Buddy can be successful in this situation, he can be successful in any situation. Felix Bush had a need. He made his need known. If you believe that your product or service is good and helpful for people, then do what you need to do to help people connect with it.

Practice makes you good at something. When you get good at something then you will be more confident about it. When you are more confident, you will do it more, which will make you do it better.

Remember, you will never be good at something unless you know you are!

Faith and your Dreams

In this clip from the movie ‘Rudy’, Rudy’s best friend, Pete, gives him an unforgettable gift for his birthday; Faith. Pete didn’t just say that he believed in Rudy’s dream of going to Notre Dame and playing football. He gives him a tangible reminder of this goal, and whenever Rudy puts that jacket on, he will remember that at least one person in his life believes in him and his dream.

Do you have a dream like Rudy that seems so far, but so real that you can taste it? Or maybe you can relate to Pete. Are you the friend that fans the flame of your buddy’s big dream?

We all need people to be on our dream team; someone who will tell us that we can do it and remind us why we have all that it takes to make it happen. If you don’t have a person in your life like that, find one. If you can be uplifting faith inspiring person for someone else; be that person.

One of the reasons that I love being a Dream Partner is that I can come along side the dreams of my clients. If I can help them see it clearly and help them believe that it can happen. It will happen.

Who do you know that needs encouragement today for their big dream? Send them a card today or give them a call. Let them know that you believe in them.

Who do you know that can be your encouragement today? Let them know that some days you may need them to do the same for you.

Remember what Pete’s dad always said: “Havin' dreams is what makes life tolerable.”

Make the World a Better Place

Maybe you can relate to Ana as she tells Harold the story of how she intended to make the world a better place with her law degree and wound up doing it with cookies. Sometimes we start out thinking that we will do or become one thing and then things turn out differently. If we are blessed, they will turn out much better than we imagined. Our gifts, life and circumstances can sometimes take us down roads that were unplanned or unintended.

Sometimes we are so close to the situation that we don’t even know what we truly bring to the table. Our gifts can be masked by our own image of what we think we should be or become that we can miss it entirely. Perhaps a parent set you on a path that they wanted you on as a kid and you just didn’t have the same passion for it as they did. Maybe it was their unfulfilled path, and you simply got stuck on it. Or maybe you had an interest in something for which you really didn’t have much talent.

Life can give us course correction opportunities if we are paying attention. Ana realized that she could make the world a better place with her passion, baking. Perhaps her study group friends encouraged her with their compliments, or just by their growing numbers. There are always clues about your gifts and ideal contribution, if you pay attention. Most life coaches that I encounter will tell me that they had been ‘coaching’ all of their lives before someone, or many people encouraged them to ‘become one’.

What do people say you bring to the table? What gifts and talents should you make sure you are contributing to the world? How would you like to be remembered as leaving the world better than you found it?

Whatever we do, we all can and should make it a goal to make the world a better place in whatever way we can.

Just Ask Already

Yikes, do you ever feel like this when you are face to face with a potential client? Gulliver brags about asking out a lady in his office, but when he is presented with the opportunity, and even gets some ‘interested’ clues from her, he chickens out.

Does that happen with you and your potential customers sometimes? The prospect sends you some buying sign clues that they may be interested and you just don’t take it to the next level. You know you want to move in for that ask, but your tongue sticks to the roof of your mouth. I know that I have been there. Heck, if we are honest, we have all been there. What stops you dead in your tracks even in the face of a seemingly willing potential client? Is it fear of success or failure? Or could it be that you have a lack of confidence in yourself or your product? It’s really about having the right amount of confidence.

Believe in your service or product and believe in yourself as one qualified to represent it. If what you are doing wasn’t worth your time and attention that it would be of no value to you. So, if you value it, there must be some benefit to others who also value the same thing. So keep reminding yourself of the value of what you are doing. It’s not really about you; it’s about helping your customers.

What can you do to overcome paralyzing fear when you are in a situation like this so you don’t kick yourself for the lost opportunity?

“Confidence is preparation. Everything else is beyond your control. ~Richard Kline. Separate the outcome from the action. Measure your success by your willingness to act on the buying sign clues. You can only control ‘you’ in a situation like that. You cannot control what the client will do.

Represent yourself or your product honestly. Don’t over promise something. The fear of success is tightly wound up with the fear of failure. You may be saying to yourself; ‘What if I am promising more than I can deliver’? Err on the side of under promising and let the service or product speak for itself.

Remember, if the client has already indicated interest, then you are half way there! All you have to do is meet them half way.

Live Rejoicing-Change your Story

You may feel like Penny Chenery Tweedy, the owner of Secretariat in this movie clip based upon the true story of Secretariat. The world is against you, the road feels so uphill. Looking back at history retrospectively, we know that Secretariat was the only horse in history to win the triple crown. Penny could have given up and a lot of people told her that she should. But, against what seems like impossible odds, she believed in that horse and never gave up.

Did you know that you could be one decision away from breaking your old story and facing success head on? That’s right, you could be one moment, one instant away from changing everything. It depends so much on the story you choose to tell. Is your story about the failed economy or the competition? Or how about your difficult childhood or how everyone else gets all the breaks? Penny didn’t tell the story of her obstacles, she told the story of her future success. She persevered until she reached her dream.

You were not put on this earth to fail. Yet, why do we write our life stories like we were? Don’t let the negative ‘what ifs’ be the headliners to your story. Consider your obstacles part of the amazing journey of victory and success. Penny saw her horse as a winner. Do you see yourself as a winner? That’s what it takes to become one!

Can your Genius Come out to Play?

When I was a kid I had to have a few ear operations. My parents always scheduled them in the summer so I wouldn't miss school. Not only did I miss some fun time being in the hospital, but, then there was the recovery time. I had a helmet of bandages and I wasn't allowed outside until they came off. I did miss playing outside with my friends. Those summers were the low point of my childhood.

Do you ever keep your genius cooped up like that? Stuck behind a window with all of the fun stuff happening outside? Every once in a while, you let it out, but for the most part, you keep it hidden inside when all the fun is happening outside. What is your genius? It's three things:

The stuff that you are really Good At; the stuff that you LOVE to do, and the stuff that people NEED you to do because it would HELP THEM.

When you are clear about those three things and begin to let them shine, you are letting your genius come out to play. Ask yourself about what those three things are for you and then ask the people that are closest to you to answer them for you too. See if what they say is the same as what you think. Sometimes people see our genius clearer than we do ourselves.

It's a Wonderful Dream

Have you seen that classical Christmas time film it’s a Wonderful Life? George Bailey has the seemingly perfect life: a loving wife, Mary, four beautiful children, and his own business. However, on Christmas Eve, George has serious business difficulties at the Bailey Building and Loan. George has a major financial crisis when his Uncle Billy loses the cash they owe the bank. The unsympathetic bank owner, Mr. Potter makes things worse. This leads George to a life crisis, and he considers suicide. A visit from his Guardian Angel Clarence shows George how much his life means by showing him how the world would be without him.

It's a magical tale of a man who's allowed to see what his family, his friends and his community would have been like if he had never been born. The moral of the story is that everyone is put on this earth to impact others in their own way. All of us have a unique contribution to make. Your contribution can change the world if you let it.

You may be living your dream and take comfort in this story because you know you are helping people and making a difference; even if times are tough, or things get challenging. The pause to consider the people you are helping will help you live to serve another day.
For others, your dream hasn’t even been born.
For those of us who let our dreams stay in our heads and not in the world; wouldn’t it be cool if we could have an Angel like Clarence show us what the world would be like if we DID bring our dream to life. Who could we help? What impact could we have? What ripple effect would our help have on the people that pass that help on to others?

Is your dream worth it? Can you make a lifelong impact by your special gifts and services? Things got tough for George in the movie, just like they will for you and me. But, in the end, the community came together to help him solve his problem and he was blessed by that. It all worked out. He had impact. The community made sure of it. Remove the 'O' Word from your Vocabulary

Running a business can be an overwhelming proposition. Trust me, I know all the steps, work and time it takes to be successful. Do you use the word ‘O”verwhelmed a lot? Do you know that the more you say it the more you will feel it? Try to remove the ‘o’ word from your vocabulary.

“When eating an elephant take one bite at a time.” Creighton Abrams ” Break your work down into manageable steps. Then, write those steps on a list and do them one at a time. Crossing off things from your list is empowering.

Remember to celebrate your accomplishments each day too. Look at that partially eaten elephant and pat yourself on the back.

What can you do today that will move you toward your dream? Do it, and then celebrate it!

As I reflect on the upcoming Thanksgiving Day celebration, I reflect on the above quote and think about Lisa. Lisa Ryan is The Appreciation Strategist and is my best friend. She is the Maslow quote personified. Her mission in life is to help people realize the power of gratitude in their businesses and in their lives. She lives it daily and challenges others to do the same. Notice the Invisible People: Today, when you go through your day, smile and say thank you to the check out lady, the UPS or mailman, the restaurant server. These are the nameless, faceless people that serve you every day. Tell them that they look nice; thank them for their service. You will make their day.

Surprise someone today: Send an unexpected note, card or gift today. Let someone know what impact they have had on you that they may not have realized. Follow your heart on this one. Someone needs to hear from you today!

Thank your customers: Did you know that it costs 65% more money to get a new customer than to keep an old one? Make sure that your customers know that you appreciate their business. Thank them today for their loyalty.

Appreciate your Circumstances: You know even your challenges are something to appreciate. We would never grow if we were not challenged. So, even if the economy is rough, or are having trouble in your marriage, appreciate the learning opportunity that exists within the challenge. There is a blessing in every challenge if you choose to look for it.

Measuring your Success like the Farmer

"Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out." – Robert Collier. It’s so easy in this day and age to be impatient with success. Patience is definitely not a virtue that is a cultural norm in the USA in 2010. So, it’s really easy to think that we are failures if we don’t make a million dollars in 3 months like the Guru’s on the internet would have us believe.

Rather, success in business is much more like success for a farmer. The farmer knows that seeds need good soil, sunlight, water and weeding and time to grow into fruit bearing crops. Daily, the farmer works to tend those crops and a tiny seed can then produce food with hundreds of seeds.

So, each day for your business, work on it like it was your farm. So, if the seed is your business concept and a healthy crop is your successful potential, let’s look at what it will take for you to succeed.

Soil- nourishment: Work here on making sure that your product or service is of high quality. Invest in yourself and the quality of your offerings. Do you need more education or to invest in a tool or program to improve your quality? An investment in yourself or your business up front can lead to higher quality outcomes down the road. If you short cut what you are doing, it will lead nowhere. You can’t plant weeds and reap healthy crops.

Sunlight- encouragement: Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your mission. Let them shed warm sunshine of encouragement to give you energy for the work. Be sunshine for others as well. Business ownership is difficult and having support is a big factor in insuring that you make to the harvesting phase.

Water- revitalization: Getting enough water is life or death for a plant. Water refreshes, revitalizes and brings health the plant. Activity, working your business is your water. If a farmer took a pitcher of water and dipped his fingers into that pitcher and flicked water on his plants every so many days, would that grow a healthy plant? Of course not. Not working on your business each day to bring in new customers is the same thing.

Weeding- purging of negativity: Weeds choke out the healthy crops. Have you ever noticed that weeds tend to like neglect? They grow quickly and out of control, just like negative thoughts can do. Don’t let negativity creep into your thought life because it will quickly kill off your business. And don’t surround yourself with negative people. Take those thoughts captive and you will weed your business garden.

Time- patience: Can you imagine a farmer going out one day and planting some seeds and then one week later being disappointed that there was no crop? Success takes time. Work on your business and yourself every day. Measure your success by your effort and not by your income when your business is new. Activity leads to victory over time. Give yourself time.

Just like the farmer, there are seasons to a successful business. There is a time for planting, a time for sowing and a time for reaping. When you plant and sow properly, you will reap. It may take time, but stick with it, and you will harvest a crop of success in the proper time. And then, there will be more seeds!

The Value of One Good Idea

“Ideas are the beginning points of all fortunes.” ~ Napoleon Hill. Last year I was in a meeting with a bunch of business owners and leaders from different industries and backgrounds. One guy was celebrating that his new patented surgical device adapted for premature babies for heart and brain operations had just been picked up by 3 local hospitals. Not only would this save countless babies lives by making very serious operations for such small delicate babies much safer, it was going to be very lucrative for his company. That was one good idea right?

Then, a guy who works in the veterinary field asked the question; “Do you think that your surgical device would also work on small animals?” Sure. And, a whole new world was opened up for him. How much do you think that idea could be worth over five years? My guess is millions! Do you think that a group of medical doctors would have come up with it? I doubt it.

One of the secrets to coming up with truly radical new ideas is that they typically come from someone outside your own industry. The walls of the thinking ‘box’ of your industry can be invisibly thick. You speak the same language, look at the same data, and see the same patterns. We all see through the lens of our own worldview and realities. The more we work in an industry or field, the more it defines the box of our thinking. That’s why it is so important that you have a group of people that are from a variety of backgrounds and industries to bounce ideas around with. Even though everyone will come to the table with their own filters, there will be a diversity of viewpoints.

Who do you know who comes from a different industry or field for whom you value their wisdom? What one or two people can you rely on to call with you need some ‘outside of the box’ thinking on a difficult issue, challenge or opportunity. Can you join a mastermind group or roundtable monthly to be challenged and to offer your wisdom to others?

There are some genius ideas out there for you. Diversify your input and see what can happen for you.

The Habit of Success

Habit. Yikes. For most of us, this word is associated with nail biting or smoking. We all have bad habits. And once they are ingrained in our daily routines, it is so hard to break them. Do you struggle with a bad habit that may be keeping you from succeeding in your dream business? How about the habit of putting off calling your prospects? Do you have a habit of putting off writing blog posts or newsletters to your list on a regular basis? I know that I can struggle with those two challenges myself.

Here are some wise words to inspire you:

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” ~Jim Rohn

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” ~Aristotle

“A bad habit never disappears miraculously; it's an undo-it-yourself project.” ~Abigail Van Buren

Good or bad, we do things habitually on a daily basis. Good habits lead to good results, bad ones hold us back.

What can you do about it? Here are some practical tips.

1. Focus on ONE new positive habit for 30 days. There are really two tips in this one. Working on something daily for 30 days will begin to create a new pathway in your brain and help it to become normal for you. AND only focusing on one new thing a day will help you stay on track. If you try to do too much, you will get overwhelmed and give up too quickly.

2. Enlist support. If you tell yourself that you want to make a change, only you will know if you don’t accomplish it. But, if you get an accountability partner, you are much more likely to be successful. You don’t want to disappoint them, now do you?

3. Write down the list of benefits of the new habit in a prominent place and read it several times a day. It will really help to constantly remind yourself that the new habit will give you a better reality than your present state.

4. Reward and celebrate every day that you can remain consistent with the new habitual behavior. Make sure that your reward it also good for you!

5. Create a system for making the habit easier to keep. For example; If you say you want to write a blog post every day, then give yourself a series of topics to make that easier. Then, each day, just look at the next one on the list and you are good to go. Keep it simple and it will be easier to stick with.

6. Repeat. Once you have a new habit in place, keep it up. Having the new behavior for 30 days helps you establish the habit, keeping up the activity will make it a deeply rooted habit.

So, once you have experienced the benefit of the new habit, remind yourself that the new habit is working and keep it up!

Two Different Women

The other day I was at a meeting and there were two women. Both were in the midst of incredible health challenges. Anna and Grace both had cancer and both had been struggling with their illnesses for years. Both had been given poor prognosis, and yet, both were still alive beyond those dates.

Even though their experiences were very similar, they met their challenges with totally different mindsets. Anna had a ‘woe is me’ attitude, and Grace was grateful to be alive.

Grace looked at each day as a gift and spent her days enjoying her family and encouraging others who were in the same boat. Her purpose was clear. Bless people every day that she is alive and demonstrate grace and encouragement to others that are under difficult circumstances.

This was Anna’s third round of cancer and she was angry. She had closed herself off of her family and friends and refused to be comforted by them.

Both women were faced with difficult realities. Both were sick and tired most of the time. But, one made a choice that actually helped not only others, but herself.

Is there an attitude or a thought that is holding you back from your purpose or dream? Is there a choice that you can be making that would bless rather than bring others or yourself down?

There is so much that we have no control over in life. But, we always have control over our own attitudes and mindsets. At the end of the meeting, Grace came up to Anna and put her arm around her and said. “I used to feel like you do right now, and then I realized that I have enough around me to be grateful for, that I would be much better off focusing on that stuff. We all only have a limited number of days on this planet. I choose to live them with gratitude.”

I was inspired by Grace. I want to be more like her. How about you?

Are you LIving your Fears or your Dreams?

“Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears.” Les Brown. I know a person who just won’t go for her dream. She’s so afraid of failure that she is paralyzed to try anything. You want to know the ironic thing about that? Her fears actually CAUSE her failure. She is actually choosing failure by not trying.

Can you relate to her? Are you choosing failure by not stepping out of your comfort zone and really giving your dream a chance? Yes, there is still a chance that you will fail. But, not trying guarantees that you will fail.

What can you do today to give your dream a chance? Success is just a matter of taking one step at a time in the direction of your dream.

Take ONE step. Do ONE thing today!

Everything you Do and Don’t Do Brands You

”We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit” – Aristotle. People are watching you. You may not even be aware of how much people are paying attention to you. I got a call a while back from a man that had been “watching” me on Linkedin for about a month. He was reading my posts and looking at my website. He finally contacted me about an opportunity because he decided that he liked what I represented and it was consistent with the character of the person for which he was looking. It made my day that I had passed his test.

That encounter got me thinking about something that I learned recently. I attended a training meeting that Christine Zust had a few weeks ago where she said that “Everything you do brands you.” (The title of her impeding book). She shared that our consistent behaviors begin to communicate to our audience who we are and what they can expect from us. She challenged the audience to be thoughtful and intentional about sending branding messages. She really reinforced for me how much people pay attention and draw conclusions about people and organizations based upon consistent messages. I look forward to getting her book when she releases it.

At that meeting, I was sitting next to a wise marketing expert by the name of Larry Mattes who contributed; “Everything that you DON’T do also brands you.“ It made me think of a local organization in town. Unfortunately, because of one of my monthly obligations, I need to work with this organization. I schedule meetings that they don’t put on their schedule. They don’t answer emails or phone calls. Whenever I think of this group, I think of poor communication. If someone asked me for feedback about them, I would never recommend them. So, they have built a negative reputation that brands them to me as unresponsive, irresponsible and rude.

If someone was watching you for a month without your knowledge, would they have more to say about what you do, or what you don’t do? Would they be able to accurately describe who you are and what you do? What messages do you hope that you are sending? What can you do to be sure that those are the branding images that people have of you and your organization?
Begin by asking your clients what one word comes to mind when they think of you or your organization. If the words they use are what you had hoped they would say, then your brand is in good shape. If they answer something less than what you would hope. Ask them for more feedback and begin to say and do things consistently that will move them toward your desired brand image. Remember, your clients and potential clients are watching you!

Stop Trying Too Hard

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.” ~ Lao Tzu. When I was in my 20’s I had a friend who was desperate to get married. She wanted it more than anything. She wanted it too much. She was so intense when she met guys that she scared them off. When she turned 30 she gave up. She decided that she was OK with being single. She was too weary of the ‘hunt’ and she really did seem to have peace about it. But, then the weirdest thing happened. As soon as she gave up the notion that she HAD to get married, she met Mr. Right.

Are you trying too hard for your dream? Are you desperate for it? If so, you may be sending a vibe that is unintended and undesired. Relax, enjoy the ride. Let go any unrealistic expectations of success that may be causing you undue stress. Stop comparing yourself to others and compare yourself to your yesterday self. Work daily toward your dream, but don’t let it overwhelm you.

A clenched fist cannot hold anything, so relax the grip and open your hands. Watch what happens.

Do you have these Success Disabilities?

I was talking the other day to a group of ladies who were kvetching about the economy and the problems they were having with their businesses. Times are tough, but, I left that meeting thinking about how many ways these ladies and even I get in the way of success. I was in a Beth Moore bible study last night and she was talking about spiritual learning disabilities and it made me think metaphorically about success disabilities. Do you have one or more of these success disabilities?

Success Attention Deficit Disorder- This applies to the person who can focus on a business model or marketing strategy. They get easily distracted by shiny things and don’t follow through with a strategy long enough for it to work. Can any Guru hoppers relate?

Success Hyperactivity Disorder- This is the over busy bee that is running and running and never stopping to measure if what they are doing is returning on the time and money investment. Get off that hamster wheel and be still. Read my Power of the Pause blog post. Quiet can be incredibly clarifying!

Success Dyslexia- These people get things turned around. They think that their business is about them and not about their customers. If you aren’t communicating value from your customer’s point of view, you may be suffering from this one.

Success Vision Impairment- Are you near sighted in your business? Are you only able to see things close up? You may be missing opportunities that are just beyond your driveway. Can you be serving in another city or to another type of population? Or how about far cited? Are there opportunities under your nose that you aren’t able to see? Ask others to be your glasses and give you some perspective.

Success Hearing Impairment- Are you customers trying to tell you something and you just aren’t listening? What about your industry? Are there trends that you may be missing? Ask for feedback and listen to what people have to say. Don’t be stubborn like my Aunt and not wear your hearing aid. People can tell when you aren’t listening.

I don’t know about you, but I know that I can be guilty of a few of these success disabilities. The first step in overcoming any disability is to admit that you have one. Then, take steps to overcome it. What can you do to overcome the one that is getting in your way? Don’t stand in your own sunshine!

When my brother Dan is not being an aerospace engineer, he is a volunteer magician. He has been doing magic since he was 14; one of his many passions. I will never forget when my daughter Leah was 3 and he was the magician at her birthday party. He turned an orange handkerchief into a goldfish right before her eyes. Unfortunately, the fish didn't make it by the next day. Leah said that turning into a fish from a handkerchief must have been too much for the poor thing. What a precious memory.

Right before the fish transformation, Dan asked the kids; "What is the magic word?" "Abracadabra?", one enthusiastic kid offered. "Open Sesame" another guessed. "No, think, you know what the magic word is", he encouraged. Finally, after a couple more misses, one of the kids squealed "PLEASE and THANK YOU". "Right!" he said, and then gave her a special toy for guessing correctly and then reminded the kids to always use the magic words.

It's important for us to use the magic words with our customers too. Please let me know how I can serve you better. Please let me know what you think of my service. Power of Pause

“Sometimes the most urgent thing you can possibly do is take a complete rest.” ~ Ashleigh Brillian. This month, I decided to ‘get off the hamster wheel’ and take a break from some of my regularly scheduled obligations so that I could pray, rest and regain some strength. Don’t you sometimes just get weary of the race sometimes? You get so busy that you don’t stop to get a little perspective on things.

I bet that it’s been nearly two years since I have given myself permission to take that kind of break. Pausing like that is like taking a broom to the attic of your brain and sweeping out all of the cobwebs. You begin to notice things that were there all along, but you were too busy to see them.

What can happen when you take a pause? Here are some possible side effects of your pause:

Clarity of purpose for the direction that you are going.
Something new: A new service or a new population to serve that you hadn’t thought of before.
An opportunity for your head and your heart to get back into sync.
Renewed strength for the journey.
A greater appreciation and gratitude for your blessings.

Whether you find renewed strength, or a new road, taking the time to pause is like filling your gas tank when you are running on fumes.

It’s not easy to jump off a treadmill that is on top speed, but no one can run at that pace forever. Think about it, if you really were running a treadmill at top speed, you would have a heart attack if you didn’t jump off.

I’m not talking about taking a vacation where you bring your laptop and work half the time either. I’m talking about really stopping the work, stepping away completely and getting time to rest, relax and renew. Empty your head of your daily obligations. Spend your time praying, meditating, and getting a massage, napping, journaling. Get in touch with the feelings of gratitude for your family, your health, your God, your gifts and nature.

I thought that I would get a renewed strength for the journey, and I did, but I also found a new road for the journey. In the midst of the pause something totally new began to happen. A new idea had a chance to form in my head and heart. I thought I would be doing one thing, and wound up finding energy in something totally different. (Stay tuned, as I put some flesh on the bone of that idea, I’ll be sharing it with you when it’s ready to share.)

Taking a pause is a choice. Choose to pause and see what can happen for you.

Leave a Selfless Legacy

“I may be here for a short while, gone tomorrow into oblivion or until the days come to take me away. But, in whatever part you play, be remembered as part of a legacy...of sharing dreams and changing humanity for the better. It's that legacy that never dies.” Unknown.

“Makin’ memories and changin’ lives”. That’s what our fast talking, long haired white water rafting guide Doug said was his purpose in life. And, boy does he LIVE it. Our family just got back from the most amazing vacation in the West Virginia New River Gorge. We signed up for the ‘Lower New” white water rafting adventure (the one for newbies) and Doug had about 20 minutes to prepare us for what would be one of the coolest experiences that I have ever had on a vacation. He talked so fast that I could hardly process his words. But in that brief time, he told stories, gave us key safety instructions, told more cow jokes than I thought existed and had me smiling the entire time. He LOVED his job, his mission in life. He knew that he played a key role in the making of the perfect vacation for people. It was about us, the vacationers, always about us.

I started thinking about Doug and the legacy that he is leaving; the impact that he had on me whether he was aware of it or not. I realize that we all leave a legacy, good or bad, intentionally or unintentionally. We are all being observed by others and those observations lead to conclusions about us that are indelible impressions in people’s minds.

I was thinking about the most common denominator of whether a legacy would be positive or negative and my hypothesis is that selflessness leads to a positive legacy and selfishness leads to a negative legacy. Test this out as I have in my own life. Think about the people in your life that have been your heroes; the people who have left the most positive lasting impression on you. Were they selfless? My list sure was. Now, think about those people who leave a bad taste in your memory mouth. Were they selfish? Hmm hmmnn. Yep. Mine too.

When you are gone, what stories do you want people to be telling about the impact you had on their lives?

If you want to have more impact in your work, your mission in life, put others first. Serve for their benefit, not for your own. Not only will you have more success in your business and your life, but you will be making a difference in the world. You will be leaving a positive legacy. Examine your motives. Are you in business just to make money? Or do you believe that what you are doing is really helping people?

Your Million Dollar Story

Have you ever thought about how boring life would be without challenges for which we can learn and grow? Everyone one of us has a 'million dollar story'. That is; the story that can inspire people because it shows how we came from one place and successfully moved to a new place. It is only a good story if you have risen up past it and have conquered it.

So, here is my challenge for you. Ask yourself these questions: What did you learn from some of the more horrific times of your life that can help someone else? How have you grown, changed, or improved as a result of surviving your life's challenges? How can you see yourself more as the conquering heroine and not the powerless victim?

When you find these answers, use them in your everyday language, written correspondence, and in your daily business encounters. Those are the words that you need to begin using.

Find the conquering part of you and begin to believe that part of yourself. Everything happens for a reason and everything happens to make us stronger.

Get Your Head in the Game

“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. “~ Dr. Wayne Dyer . My daughter is on a travel softball team representing our town. When they started this year, they were a hodgepodge of kids. A few of these kids had never played ball at all and most of them had only played on a low level recreation league. The coach didn’t expect much, and the kids didn’t expect much. They tied their first game. They lost their second game to a team that beat them soundly with a mercy rule; and has since been undefeated.

But, then they started to win, and win, and win. They started to EXPECT to win. They would THINK of themselves as winners before they even started playing and then, they would confidently play. They had the mindset of winners. When they played the undefeated team the second time, they were a little intimidated. They played differently against them, better than the first time, but they still lost by one point. It’s so interesting to me how much of a head game it really was. When they realized that they were close to beating them, they knew that they could beat them. They still have to play that team one more time, and this time, I think they will win.

Do you expect to win or expect to lose? “If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right.” ~Henry Ford. So, how do you get yourself to the place where you THINK you can? Here are some suggestions:

Imagine yourself winning. Play the successful scenario out in your head. Imagine yourself confidently explaining your product or service. Anticipate objections and have the answers that overcome them ready.

Give yourself credit for your successes. If you only notice the negative, you will dwell on the negative. Practice the sandwich method. Take stock in what you did well, then look at what you could have done better, then finish with celebrating the successful aspects. This two to one ratio will begin to help shift your thinking in a positive direction.

Look confident and you will feel confident. Did you know that your body communicates a lot about your level of confidence? Your posture, facial expressions, even clothing communicate the essence of who you are constantly. I don’t know about you, but I can read those nonverbal cues even over the phone. Try having a sales conversation while you are slouching and frowning and then compare your results with an attentive and optimistic posture.

Change the conversations that you have about yourself and your abilities to that of success expectation and watch yourself begin to succeed. I love the quote from the classic 1990’s movie ‘Little Giants’ where Steve Emtman is talking to the kids; “Just remember, football is 80% mental and 40% physical.”

Get your head in the game and win!

Sniffing Opportunities like Bloodhounds

“You just have to be opportunistic, and try to figure out what creates value... Where the bottom is, what creates incremental value, and in what combinations.”~ John Malone. Did you know that bloodhounds are the animal kingdoms best detectives? They have a sense of smell that is 40 times more sensitive than humans. They take in scent information and are absolutely relentless until they find the source of that scent. They are so accurate in their ability to track people and things with their superior snouts that their findings are admissible in a court of law.

What if you and I were like bloodhounds in a pursuit of creative opportunities?

The other day at a Redwood Sisterhood breakfast we all practiced being bloodhounds. Sometimes it’s hard to do this yourself, so lesson number one is to have this discussion with a few people who are outside your own industry. We asked people to share what they do; for whom they do it; and how they go about finding those customers now. Then people just started spit balling some crazy possibilities. One lady was looking for ways to get in front of a lot of cars because she does ‘oil change house calls’. It was recommended that she partner with detailers in the area and throw in her service with theirs, or talks to salons and has people get their oil changes while they are getting a hair cut or color. Another was selling wickless candles and was offered the suggestion to go into nursing homes where the smells would be cheerful without being dangerous or harmful. One person adapts surgical tools for newborns and preemies; why not also sell to veterinarian surgeons?

Your industry or sales method can become a box for you if are not careful. Because the oil change lady was thinking ‘house calls’, she overlooked that there are places where cars are sitting in trustworthy parking lots all day long. Or, just because you do 'house party sales' doesn't mean you need to be limited to selling that way. One jewelry sales person I know gave up selling her 'home sale product' at home parties in favor of getting booths at cheer competitions because she knew that thousands of moms and daughters would be walking by her table for a minimum of eight hours nearly every weekend. Because the medical device sales person was thinking of his product use as being for humans, he overlooked those small animals that need similar surgeries could also benefit from his lifesaving technology. It takes someone outside your field or industry to see outside the box.

Here are two internet exercises for you. First, search the words that you use to describe your service or product. Notice which websites pop up and what language that they use to describe this service. What is the overall ‘feel’ of this site? What can you learn about how they are trying to sell this product or service? Compare it to your own language.

Next, search the words that you use to describe your ideal target audience. What organizations are also targeting this audience, but not directly selling what you do? How are they appealing to this audience? Is it more or less persuasive than you do? Is there a service or product offering that does not compete at all with you, but compliments what you do? (Like the oil change and car detailing example) Look for potential partnership opportunities here.

Bloodhounds take their scent information to the end of the trail. They don’t stop until the job is done. Where can your creative nose for opportunities take you?

See it and then Do it

“Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your Vision is the promise of what you shall one day be. Your Ideal (vision) is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil.” -James Allen . We had a cool vision exercise as the final intervention of my masters program. Our intact group of students had spent two years learning how to be Organization Development Consultants and this exercise was the last one of our final class on Career Development. How would we put into motion, all that we had learned and turn it into a lifelong passionate career? The exercise was a guided imagery that took us through the ideal perfect day 5 years into the future. (I have since turned it into a writing exercise that you can find at http://bit.ly/bc9Yf7)

I saw myself as an Independent Organization Development Consultant, married with two small children; a boy and a girl. I was home based, but had many small organizations as clients. I was helping them plan, moving them forward. The feeling that I was having an impact that went way beyond the people in that room was so satisfying. When the guided imagery exercise was over, we wrote our experience in great detail in a black and white composition book. At the time I was a newlywed with no kids and I was working for my mom at her real estate company.

Five years later, I was cleaning out the attic, preparing to move to a new house and found that composition book. It was one month past the 5 year date of that experience. Do you know that the only thing that didn’t resemble my life in that moment of time? I had 2 girls instead of a girl and a boy. It gives me chills, just as it did at the time, to think about it.

“You must first clearly see a thing in your mind before you can do it.”- Alex Morrison. See yourself successful and then you put into motion the very thing itself. Imagining it helps make it possible, real for you.

The key to putting a vision in motion after you see it is asking the right questions. What would have to change for this to become a reality in 5 years? What would you have to learn? How would you have to go outside of your comfort zone to get there? Who would you have to meet? What would have to happen first, second, third to move you there? What investments will it take to get there? Then, do those things!

Is your Heart in It? 5 Ways to know

“When work, commitment, and pleasure all become one and you reach that deep well where passion lives, nothing is impossible. Unknown. Have you ever met anyone like this person who has tapped the ‘deep well where passion lives’? They have that quiet energy, that charisma that tells you that they have found the secret. They are living in a place where knowledge, skills and talent are all working in perfect harmony, passionately pursuing their dreams. Have you met someone like that? Are you someone like that? It’s wonderful to be in their presence isn’t it? Their energy just makes you smile.

Knowledge is the stuff that you learn. Skills are the things you learn to do. Talent is a God-given gift that you have, and can harness. When all three are working in concert, you have found your passion sweet spot. You have found what you were put on this planet to do; what indelible mark you are to make on others in this world. It’s magical to find that zone.

How do you know if you are hitting that sweet spot? Five things will tell you:

You are good at it. You like it. You are energized by it. You are propelled to do it. People are blessed by you when you do it.

It takes hitting all five of these things to really know you are in your passion place. There are things for which you are skilled, but they may not give you energy. I have never liked chess. My brother loves it. Guess which one of us is good at it?

In many cases, you like something because you are good at it; but, not always. Sometimes you are good at something but you don’t enjoy it and it doesn’t give you energy. I can write grants, but I don’t love writing grants. So, it is a skill to rely on, but not one for which to build my career upon. I love facilitation. I am good at it, and I get energy from it. So, I do it as much as I can.

I think that the most important thing on the list above is that people are blessed when you do it. Nothing makes you feel more satisfied than knowing that you have helped and blessed people with your gifts, talents and service. That’s what propels you to do it. Knowing that it doesn’t just make you feel good to serve with your gifts, but that your service benefits others.

Real Estate of a Dream

It's tangible, it's solid, it's beautiful. It's artistic, from my standpoint, and I just love real estate.- Every day, you'll have opportunities to take chances and to work outside your safety net. Sure, it's a lot easier to stay in your comfort zone.. in my case, business suits and real estate.. but sometimes you have to take risks. When the risks pay off, that's when you reap the biggest rewards. Donald Trump.
My mother owned a real estate agency when I was a teenager and young adult. My first job was with that company and I learned a lot from my mom and that industry that is still relevant to me today. I got to thinking today about real estate and dreams and found some metaphorical similarities that I wanted to share with you.

Does your dream have property? You make your dream more real when you have something tangible, touchable about it. Do you have a website? A product that you can touch? An office location? Any one of these things show that you are serious enough about your dream to have invested in some actual property.

Does your dream have sweat equity? If you are working hard, putting your heart, blood sweat and tears into your dream, then you are serious. All of that work will come back to you. It is your sweat equity into your business. When you put hard word into maintaining a real estate property, it comes back to you in increased financial value. The same is true of sweat equity. Keep working at it and it will come back to you.

Is your dream a sought after commodity? Real estate increases its value over time. The properties that increase in value are those in prime locations that are in excellent condition. They are desirable, sought after commodities. Listening to your customers and offering exactly what they say they want will increase your dream businesses value over time.

Do you love your dream enough? People that love their properties invest in them. Do you love your dream enough to make the necessary investments in it and in you to make sure that it not only survives, but thrives?
